Reviews
I have been very happy with my Laiv uDAC! I have it connected to my PS AUDIO DirectStream SACD transport via i2S. The Laiv was able to match well to that connection. The overall sound I am getting is very detailed. Very happy with my purchase!
I can say I'm quite an audioholic in the sense that I keep on switching gear. This is mainly triggered by reading and watching reviews. Last month I decided to get some money back out of the hobby because I spend most time using surround receiver with films. The Laiv udac came on my radar because of the price and R2R ladder which I've never experienced before. I was always a clarity and transparency kind of guy. But nowadays I'm more focused on organic sound and flow. Therefore I changed Dynaudios for Closer acoustics Ogy with BOB and a Karan class A amp. The great news is that Laiv doesn't dissappoint. The uDac has enough clarity and transparency for my taste. It does seem to need burn-in, because the second day I missed those traits. As I was streaming from my mac I was looking into the uDDC, which I also got secondhand. And that lifted the sound into another ballpark. For the first time instruments and voices got a real 3D feel. The Wandla is great at pinpointing in space, but never did I hear the depth/body of the instruments. Now I understand the love for R2R!! Unfortunately the uDDC does still fare better with a good source. Comparing the mac mini with a Innuos Zen mk3, the Zen does flow better. Therefore I got an Volumio Rivo to replace it. All in all I think I managed to get a similar quality of sound for less than half op the cost of my older setup! Brands like Laiv make this hobby more affordable without skimping on great sound quality.
The first thing I recognized out of the box was the build quality and how heavy this little DAC is in the palm of your hand. I was expecting this DAC to sound decent, but needing time to break in around 100 hours or so. I was amazed at how good it sounded right out of the box. If it continues to sound better during the break-in, this might just be one of the key purchases in my entire system. If you are looking for an R2R DAC with great sound at a great price, look no further. Five stars.
