Big thanks to Lachlan from Passion for Sound for putting the LAiV Crescendo VERSE through its paces in his latest review. With a reputation for honest, technically grounded audio reviews, his take carries real weight in the audiophile community.
Lachlan tested the Crescendo Verse against some strong competition, the Schiit Mimir and the FiiO K17, using reference-grade headphones (the Audeze LCD-5) alongside a high-end speaker setup. That is about as thorough a real-world test as you can ask for.
His headline says it all: there may no longer be a need for expensive DACs. And after spending time with the VERSE, he makes a compelling case for it.
What he loved
The sound quality was the clear standout. Lachlan described the Verse as delivering a clean, spacious soundstage that held its own against pricier separates, both through headphones and on speakers. The 4.4mm balanced output with its low output impedance was noted as a strong match for demanding planar headphones.
Beyond the sound, the large display earned praise for being genuinely useful and easy to read, something that matters more than people give it credit for, especially for anyone in a less-than-ideal listening environment.
Lachlan also walked through the Verse's NOS (non-oversampling) mode and 1-bit DSD decoding, highlighting the depth of what is packed into a single chassis: DAC, headphone amplifier, and preamp, all in one.
A few honest notes
Like any thorough reviewer, Lachlan did not hold back on the parts that could be better. The menu interface took some getting used to -- he described it as having a few "wrinkles," and recommended new users start simple: plug in via RCA and let the default settings run while you get acquainted with the sound. Good advice, and something we are actively looking at as we refine the user experience.
The bottom line
The Crescendo Verse is positioned as a serious all-in-one desktop solution, and Lachlan's review confirms it belongs in that conversation. Whether you are coming from a dedicated headphone amp setup or building your first high-resolution desktop system, the Verse gives you a lot to work with.
